Organic Chemistry Chapter 1
Why do we distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds?
Why are organic compounds important?
What is structural theory?
What term is used to describe different substances with the same formula?
What are the most commonly bonded elements to carbon?
Elements form 4 bonds, 3 bonds,2 bonds, and single bonds? Name them(1) and their respective label names.
Monovalent - Hydrogen, Halides, and Halogens
What is covalent bonding?
Pair of electrons shared between two atoms.
Simple Lewis structure.
1. Draw the individual atoms to represent the valence electrons.
2. Put the atoms together so they share pairs of electrons to make complete octets.
Lewis structures, show NH3, CH4,NH2, NH4
Compare the number of valence electrons that should be associated with the atom to the number of valence electrons that are actually associated with an atom.
NH2 = -1= N(-3) + 2H(1)
if charge given but you need to find individual charge then isolate such as with an algebra problem.
Polar covalent bonds?
Electrons pairs that exist in an orbital shared between two atoms.
Covalent bonds are either polar or nonpolar.
Nonpolar covalent bonds: bonded atoms share electrons evenly
Polar covalent bonds: one of the atoms attracts electrons more than the other.
